In this jet paced society, we have to take care of our health very meticulously. The least we can do is to opt for healthy eating. This healthy food does not necessarily mean dieting, but the food you take should be balanced, rich in all nutrients and help you building immunity. Follow the simple steps mentioned below and you will better understand what you are eating now and what you should eat henceforth.
1. Follow the food pyramid – it is an excellent guide what you should eat. The 1992 food pyramid is still well accepted worldwide. It shows that majority of your portion should come from carbohydrates like bread, cereal, pasta and rice. In addition, it will be better to take whole grain bread and brown rice instead of polished cereals. It will provide enough fiber to maintain normal functioning of GI system. Then comes the fruit and vegetables group. You should take enough fresh vegetables like spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, tomatoes, carrots, beans and capsicum. Fresh fruit or fresh fruit juice like apples, oranges, grapes, bananas are the best seasonal fruits. Blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries are rich in antioxidants which will help in reducing the free radicals from our body. Next comes the fish, poultry, meat, eggs and dry fruits like almonds, cashews, walnut etc. along with milk and dairy products like yogurt and cheese. Your diet should contain least amount of oil and fats. Again, the oil should be mono- or polyunsaturated fatty acid.

New Foods Role in Eating Healthy
Posted by admin in Healthy Eating on August 14, 2010
Without an organic dinner, surprisingly you may have eaten new foods.
Or a genetically modified food without even knowing about it.
That is because, in Canada and the U.S. the food industry and growers don’t have to let us know. With as much as 70% of the food now containing gmf or 30,000 products, I can only imagine we haven’t been told because we just might get a tad upset about it.
The genetically modified crops are supposed to handle drought better, or have more nutrients. Who knows, maybe one day you can get your daily dose of pharmaceuticals in your morning cereal.
Not really. You see, pretty much anything could be dreamed up and given a try. How about bananas that produce the human vaccine against hepatitis B? I found this promoted on the US government Human Genome Project site.
Or, what about Terminator seeds that are genetically altered to be infertile after the first harvest?
Currently the crops that are genetically modified are corn, soybeans, canola, alfalfa, tomatoes, wheat and cotton. Since we don’t need to be informed. And since the food processors may not even know, your families safest bet to healthy eating is organic food. Read the rest of this entry »
What is Healthy Food?
Posted by admin in Health Food on August 14, 2010
What is healthy food is often considered to be everything in your local health food store. Now, this would be the biggest myth there is in a healthy eating diet plan.
Health food stores buy their products. If the buyer is uneducated in the area of food additives, he could be sold anything and hinder your efforts at eating healthy foods.
For example, I recently went into a health food store that had a sign over the ketchup promoting the ingredient HFCS instead of sugar.
High Fructose Corn Syrup is a man made food additive. It is linked to obesity and diabetes. This is an ingredient that should be avoided and not used instead of sugar. HFCS is not part of eating healthy foods.
Another example is aspartame. This chemical is permitted to be used in supplements even though it is linked to neurological disease. Just this one ingredient has 92 possible different side effects reported to the FDA. This additive is often found in children vitamins. So, read the labels and avoid this ingredient in your healthy eating diet plan. Read the rest of this entry »
Healthy Foods for Hair
When hair looks unhealthy, its ends split and hair brush gets unusually full after every combing, it is time to start working on some improvements. Most often problems with hair occur due to a wrong diet. Four main vitamins and four minerals add up into healthy hair formula.
While it is easy to find pills that would give the right complex of nutritious components for shiny strong hair, one should think about good food as vegetables and fruit instead of chemicals in a pill.
Here are nine main products for haircare:
1. Chickpeas. This is the best solution for any person because they are a good substitute of meat which is especially beneficial for vegetarians and the ones who exclude meats from their diets due to various believes and purposes.
Chickpeas are full in Zinc and Vitamin B6. The mineral is responsible for hair growth by building hair protein. Together with Vitamin A it works on scalp health preventing dandruff.
Vitamin B6 or Folic acid is responsible for the amount of oxygen in blood which improves hair growth as well.
2. Roast beef. If the person is all right about having meat, roast beef will be the one that serves the same purpose as chickpeas since it is also rich in Zinc and Vitamin B6.
The meat is a good source of Protein that is a building brick for hair and nails. When the person tries to stay away from meat, they can take Protein from soy beans, green vegetables and sunflower seeds.
3. Soy beans. Besides Protein, soy is full in Iron and vitamin E. Iron is important for the creation of hemoglobin cells which increase oxygen level in the blood and provides faster hair growth. Read the rest of this entry »
Breast Cancer Avoidance trough Healthy Food Habits
Posted by admin in Cancer Care, Health Food on August 14, 2010
Statistics showing that women in the US have higher risks of developing breast cancer than women in China or Japan and that breast cancer risks for Asian women that migrate in the US increases over generations, becoming similar to that of US white women, thus suggesting that lifestyle or environmental factors rather than genetics being responsible for this differences, led to a study in order to identify these factors.
597 women with breast cancer and 966 healthy women of Chinese, Japanese and Filipino descent living in San Francisco, Oakland, Los Angeles or Hawaii took part in a research in which their mothers who were also living in the US were questioned about their daughters’ frequency of soy consumption in childhood. By dividing soy intake into thirds and comparing the highest and lowest groups, researches concluded that high intake of soy in childhood was associated with a 58 percent reduction in breast cancer and 20 to 25 percent reduction in the adolescent and adult years. The results were conclusive regardless of race, study site and family history. The study lead investigator, Larissa Korde, M.D., M.P.H., a staff clinician at the NCI’s Clinical Genetics Branch, stated:
“Since the effects of childhood soy intake could not be explained by measures other than Asian lifestyle during childhood or adult life, early soy intake might itself be protective. Soy isoflavones have estrogenic properties that may cause changes in breast tissue. Animal models suggest that ingestion of soy may result in earlier maturation of breast tissue and increased resistance to carcinogens.” Read the rest of this entry »
Tips to Beat Nighttime Appetite
Posted by admin in Food Cravings on August 14, 2010
Do not eating two or three hours before you go to bed. More than that and you’ll get too hungry – and you’ll be much more likely to give in to your appetite. Less than that and you won’t have enough time to burn the calories before you go to sleep. One exception: if you are trying to add muscle mass it is ok to eat some protein or drink a high-protein, low or no carb shake up to an hour before going to sleep.
Break up your nighttime routine by limiting mindless activities is like watching TV. One of the reasons many people get appetite late at nighttime is because they’re just plain bored. They consciously or subconsciously turn to food to give their brains something to do. Play a game, read a book, talk to your kids – anything that at least partially engages the brain will keep it too busy to think about food.
Have breakfast always. Skipping breakfast is one of the biggest causes of food appetite throughout the day – even late at night! And eating less in the evening will ensure that you’re very hungry in the morning, so it should be easier to eat a nice big healthy meal. Read the rest of this entry »
